✦Where Summer Starts✦

For many of us, there are places in our hometown that embody a specific feeling, moment, or memory.

For both me and Mia, the feeling of summer (among many other prominent memories) is bestowed upon the famous Peach Beach, located just 5 minutes from my house. It’s a small beach bordering one of the largest rivers in our state, and everyone in our town flocks to it the moment June hits. This is a short entry I wrote in my journal about how I view my favorite time of the year — Summer — and its relevance to the beach both Mia and I know & love dearly.

School starts next week and almost all of the hair tinsel has fallen out of my head.

It ends and starts this way every summer:

Peach Beach swims when the sun starts to peak out from the otherwise constant cloud cover of Washington state. June begins with bliss and a feeling of instability, as well as fresh hair tinsel strung through each strand of blonde like streaks of starlight.

My skin gets darker as June melts into July. Every day is something new. I party with my friends. I kiss boys then I miss my ex when I do. I dance to Mac Miller and yell Kanye lyrics out of car windows, and I bathe in the bliss of being young. I replace my hair tinsel when it begins to fall out and melancholy does not yet stain my bones.

August sneaks up on me every year. It’s the month when the earth prepares itself to die again in Fall; it is inherently sad. Fires char forests and paint the sky a hellish orange, and smoke lingers in each inhale.

School starts next week and I’m taking out what’s left of my hair tinsel now on Peach Beach. It always starts and ends this way every summer.
