things to do besides scrolling
Surveys all across the world show that 90% of teenagers use social media. And don’t get me wrong, if you use social media “correclty” it can be a positive contribution to your life. For example, without social media, there wouldn’t be Girlhood or other positive resources. However, there are constant negatives: Comparison, hate, addiction, standards, FOMO, body image, etc. I struggle with scrolling on my phone and “rotting” in my bed, and I compare myself with others with each swipe. I never thought about it negatively impacting my brain until recently, and I created a list of things to do besides scrolling.
Do your missing assignments.
I swear, the main cause of procrastination is my phone. When I want to be productive, sometimes I have to put it in a different room so I don’t go on it. If you feel like you’re going insane laying in your bed and scrolling on Instagram, go do your missing assignments. Don’t have anything missing? Do your homework. I know it can be difficult, but putting on a cute outfit and going to a coffee shop is extremely helpful. Do whatever works for you!
Go Outside!
Whether it be going on a hike or lying under a tree, fresh air is a great way to take a break from your phone. When you are constantly on a screen, you forget how nice it is to be outside. The world is beautiful – You’ll find yourself realizing that you can get free relaxation right outside your window :).
Visit your favorite stores or your favorite places!
Go roam a bookstore or go to your favorite mall! It’s the best way to pass the time, window shop (if you’re a broke student like me,) or buy items that will make you happy. I love shopping because it makes me forget about my phone, or what else is going on in my life. I recommend making a list of your favorite places so you can go there when you’re feeling sad, or just need a break from life.
Move your body!
When I’m not doing anything for hours just staring at my phone, I feel like I need to do something active. Going to the gym, a walk, rock climbing, or anything active releases endorphins, which make you feel refreshed and happy. If you need a good start to your day, go off your phone and move your body!
Do something crafty!
I’ve recently been into sewing and learning more about it. But doing something crafty like painting, making bracelets, etc. can help with your creativity. When you are on your phone, you don’t pick up as much creativity as doing things IRL. So go to the store, pick up some paint, and get creative!
