girlhood.
Every interview has started off with, “Where did you get the idea for Girlhood?”
If the Barbie movie didn’t exist, this website wouldn’t either. I was warned on TikTok to be prepared for tears, but I didn’t know the movie could evoke such a feeling. I walked out of the theater with stinging eyes, unable to describe the emotions going through my head.
Later that night, I wanted to find a way to bring girls together. I wanted a safe place for girls to share their experiences and not be afraid of judgment. Sophia brought the idea to life, and we started to gain a following in a week. We got an immense amount of support and kindness all around the world, and submissions from girls who shared similar experiences as us.
There is one word to define this unity – Girlhood.
Being a girl is the most beautiful part of life. I want to share with you some of my favorite feelings that want to make me say, “Oh, how I love being a woman!”
Getting Ready With Your Girls
It’s 10 PM and you’re blasting Drake with your best friends. You sitting on the floor, while your friend picks out a perfect outfit for you to impress your crush. It makes you feel like you’re on top of the world. From football games to going to the movies, you know that you & your girls will face whatever the night brings.
Taking Pictures of Each Other
There is something so sweet about taking another girl's photo, especially a stranger. I can always count on a girl to hype me up. It’s endearing to see that girls support girls in the littlest ways. It’s an act of kindness, but also a sense of girlhood.
Braiding a Girl's Hair
The obsession with braiding hair is a cannon event for girls. At the age of 10-13, I wanted to braid every girl’s hair in sight. If a younger sister or girl asks to braid my hair, I will never decline. It brings back memories from when I was a young girl.
The Traveling of a Hairband
If you see a hairband on a girl’s wrist and ask for it, they will 100% hand it over. Even if they’re going to use it later, or if it never left their wrist for months. Usually, when a girl asks me, it’s an instinct to just hand it to them. I don’t think of it, as it was probably originally from another girl anyway.
Starbucks Runs
One sip of a Strawberry Acai Lemonade from Starbucks could save my life. I’m being overdramatic, but there’s nothing I love more than going on a Starbucks run with my best friends. It’s a general bonding experience and a way to recap about what happened the night before. I could spend hours sitting in the parking lot and laughing about absolutely nothing.
“Do you have Aquaphor?”
My Aquaphor is definitely filled with germs from girl’s hands. That clearly sounds disgusting, but is actually kind of adorable. Whenever someone whips out a bottle of Aquaphor or some type of chapstick, every girl's finger comes out, trying to get some of it. It makes sense, nobody likes chapped lips.
Compliments
There’s nothing better than having a girl make your day by complimenting you. Sure, a boy's compliments can sometimes be fun & exciting (or gross), but when a girl compliments you, the sun shines a little brighter. It’s always genuine, and you can’t help but feel like you made a new friend.
Just remember: You will always have your girls. We’re all in this together.
